Bizarre how some clients come about, and Millican is the most odd, and the one I’m most surprised, and happy with.  I was sat in a cafe on a Sunday morning, eating breakfast with my wife.  I was reading an article in The Independent about companies we should sit up and look at – that are doing great things, and have great products, and I noticed a small feature on Millican. After reading the article and being impressed with their products, business delivery and approach, I picked up my iPhone and wrote an email immediately to the owner, congratulating them on such a great company and that there were people reading their article in The Independent.  We struck up a friendship over a number of emails where I gave them my advice around replacement e-commerce systems – and after a short while, we met and were awarded their business to re-develop their e-commerce website and back-end systems. The path to delivery for Millican has not been easy.  I don’t mind saying it.  Their attention to detail is exacting.  More so than pretty much any other client we’ve had.  And it shows – their website, like their products is almost pixel-perfect.  I say almost – both the client and ourselves are still chipping away at minor irritations to get closer to e-commerce website nirvana.

What was delivered?

We took their existing website, product data, customers, stock, and pretty much entire setup and ported it across from a custom-built system that was integrated with a warehouse solution they were moving away from, and migrated them to Magento.  We’ve replaced their back-end payment provider with SagePay, we’ve handheld them and trained them to the point that they’re cruising through a good volume of enquiries and orders daily and we’re now planning future system upgrades and releases with them. You can see their finished website here.

Thoughts

You know, we’re very lucky to have Millican as a client.  I said they’re exacting – it’s had us up and shift parts of our game to deliver some novel and technically challenging solutions.  It’s had us test and test again before things were released.  And it’s had us constantly evaluate and hone our software development process.  The co-founders, Nicky and Jorrit have taken on enormous amounts in a very short space of time as a business – big product, location and IT shifts, without going into any great detail … and they’ve come through with an even better product line-up, and a superb, stable, scalable platform for growth from both a technical and logistics perspective.  My hat is off to them and we look forward to a long relationship with them.
